This is the English-language version of the 2025 publication « Velykyi Luh or the Kakhovka Reservoir: A Modern Vision» (ISBN 978-617-8501-03-7) that is primarily de voted to assessing future scenarios for the territory of the former Kakhovka Reservoir and the southern region of Ukraine that historically depended on it. The authors explore pos sible pathways for the region’s revival, including the restoration of natural ecosystems and meeting contemporary economic and societal needs, the construction of a new res ervoir, and a number of other innovative scenarios. The scenario assessment presented in this publication is based on a thorough analysis of the environmental and social conse quences of the reservoir’s creation in the mid-twentieth century and its impact on natural landscapes, local communities, and the regional economy. Particular attention is given to the challenges that emerged following the destruction of the dam in 2023, as well as to the prospects for the sustainable development of this unique territory.
