According to official estimates by the State Environmental Inspectorate of Ukraine, more than half of all confirmed environmental damage caused by the war in the territories under Ukrainian control has been inflicted on the Protected Areas Network. This publication provides a detailed analysis of the damage by classifying the cases and range of destruction affecting Ukraine’s Protected Areas Network as a result of russia’s war against Ukraine from 2014 through the end of 2025.
The authors also propose an original methodology for screening the overall number of damaged areas within the Protected Areas Network, thereby illustrating the scale of the problem and providing a basis for further analysis and the development of recovery solutions.
