The book is dedicated to the Emerald Network of Ukraine — part of the pan-European nature conservation system established under the Bern Convention and aimed at the conservation of natural habitats and species of European importance. The Emerald Network is a direct functional equivalent of the Natura 2000 network in EU countries and serves as a key instrument for Ukraine’s integration into European nature conservation policy.
The publication systematically presents information on 74 Emerald Network sites in Ukraine across all regions of the country. For each site, the following is provided:
- geographic location and area;
- key natural habitat types;
- a list of plant and animal species of European importance;
- the site’s role in biodiversity conservation;
- the impact of war on the state of natural complexes.
The book is bilingual (Ukrainian and English) and is aimed at:
- nature conservation professionals;
- civil servants and individuals responsible for environmental policy implementation;
- international partners;
- a wide audience interested in the conservation of Ukraine’s nature.
More than 30 Ukrainian biologists, as well as experts from related fields and photographers, were involved in the preparation of the publication. The materials are based on up-to-date scientific data, field research, and official information used in the process of forming the national list of Emerald Network sites.
The publication has practical significance for:
- preparing Ukraine for the transition from the Emerald Network to Natura 2000 as part of the European integration process;
- planning conservation measures;
- developing management decisions for the conservation of natural areas;
- increasing awareness of European nature conservation standards.
