We have great news! The first dedicated Protection Zone (Okhoronna Zona) specifically for biodiversity conservation has been officially established in the Rivne region (Rivenenshchyna, Western Ukraine).
This new designation ensures that 15.7 hectares of forest within the Novomalyn Forestry of the Dubno Forest Management Unit (operated by the State Enterprise “Forests of Ukraine”—the state forestry management body) will now be protected from clear-cutting (sutsilni rubky).
These specific plots serve as the habitat for the Northern Clubmoss (Lycopodium annotinum), a plant species listed in the Red Data Book of Ukraine (national list of threatened species).
The process to establish this zone was lengthy because the local foresters initially doubted the validity of our data. This necessitated additional joint field surveys conducted with representatives of the Rivne Regional State Administration (the regional government body).
Our specialists are now preparing documentation to establish new Protection Zones in various other regions across Ukraine, replicating this successful model.
