The Odesa Regional Council has announced the establishment of 3 local landscape sanctuaries. Last year we submitted the application for their creation. The total area of the sanctuaries is over 635 hectares. Congratulations to everyone involved in this joyful achievement!
There are some words about sanctuaries:
Landscape sanctuary “Kolo Gleya” (45 hectares).
The protected area is located east of the village Kalaglia in the Odesa district of the Odesa region. There are natural habitats within the sanctuary which are subject to protection in accordance with Resolution 4 of the Bern Convention, namely the Pontic-Sarmatian deciduous shrubs. Among animals 3 protected species were found there: the European pond turtle (protected by Resolution 6 of the Bern Convention), the European roller and the lesser blind mole-rat (protected by the Red Data Book of Ukraine).
Landscape sanctuary “Skhyly do Lunga” (11 hectares).
The protected area is located south of the village Bagate, north of the village Stara Nekrasivka in the Izmail district of the Odesa region. The territory of the sanctuary is the coastal area of Lung Lake, and its steppe slopes. There are populations of the speckled ground squirrel, the European roller, and the Caspian whipsnake there. All these species are protected by the Red Data Book of Ukraine.
Landscape sanctuary “Chygrynska Balka” (579 hectares).
Scientists repeatedly conducted research on this area and drew attention to its high nature conservation value. “Chygrynska Balka” is located in the Bereziv district of the Odesa region.
The following plant species listed to the Red Data Book are there: pheasant’s eye, hairy feathergrass, Pontic iris, woolly-flowered milkvetch, Boucher’s ornithogalum, spring meadow saffron and many others. In total, there are 33 species of flora included in various protected lists. Moreover, there are various types of natural habitats there which according to Resolution 4 of the Berne Convention are under threat of extinction and require special conservation measures.
