The Ukrainian Nature Conservation Group (UNCG) is proud to announce the publication of a new book on the life and work of Mykola Sharleman, a monumental figure in Ukrainian conservation. This project was a decade in the making. While his biography and many of his publications are known among Ukrainian biologists and historians, his most interesting contributions have remained largely unrecognized until now.
Many pages of modern nature conservation in Ukraine were either started independently or adopted from Western countries, and Mykola Sharleman was the one to introduce them. For example, he proposed:
- The establishment of The Red Data Book.
- The restoration of damaged habitats within protected areas.
- The documentation of the environmental consequences of military actions.
At his personal request, the first Ukrainian nature reserves, “Askania-Nova” and “Koncha-Zaspa”, were established. In science, Mykola Sharleman authored key works on zoogeography and modern zoological nomenclature, and in conservation, he wrote the first Ukrainian-language publications. He also documented the earliest records of many rare animals in Ukraine.
Despite his immense contributions, Sharleman’s life was extremely difficult. He lived through two world wars, the Holodomor (the man-made famine of 1932-1933), Soviet repressions, occupation, deportation, and a party-imposed ban on the citation and even storage of his works in libraries.
We invite you to discover the incredibly interesting story of the man who gave the greatest impetus to the development of nature conservation in our country.
