Thanks to our appeal, the Pavlohrad District Prosecutor’s Office has protected the “Ternivskyi” nature reserve in the Dnipropetrovsk region. The Pavlohrad City-District Court ruled that a decision by the Bohdanivska Village Council, which had previously transferred a 1.76-hectare plot within the reserve into private ownership, was illegal and thus canceled it. The court also terminated the land-use agreement with a local farm.
However, this is only part of the problem. In 2021, we documented 24 similar land plots, each 1.76 hectares in size, within the reserve. Some of these plots have already been plowed, even though they are communal property. Unfortunately, the local community does not engage in the protection of these areas.
The “Ternivskyi” reserve was established in 2008 by the Dnipropetrovsk Regional Council. Its area is over 2,000 hectares, which is roughly the size of 2,850 football fields. Can you imagine the scale of natural beauty that is disappearing due to human negligence and illegal activities?
The reserve is home to valuable steppe ecosystems in the Ternivka River valley, where rare species such as hairy feather grass (Stipa capillata) and oak tulip (Tulipa quercetorum) can be found.
