It was a final vote. The Law should be approved by the Council of the European Union in the nearest future.
What targets does this new European law set?
– 30% of natural habitats in poor condition must be restored by 2030, 60% by 2040 and 90% by 2050.
– Natural habitats in good condition must not be destroyed.
– 30% of drained peatlands used in agriculture must be restored by 2030 (at least a quarter of them shall be rewetted), 40% by 2040, 50% by 2050.
– 25,000 km of rivers must be returned to a free-flowing state with the restoration of floodplains.
– Every country of EU must develop appropriate plans of nature restoration and report for their implementation.
Moreover, there should be positive trends in certain biodiversity indicators, such as the diversity level of agricultural landscapes, population of meadow butterflies, bird populations in various types of landscapes, stock of dead wood etc.
More than 6,000 scientists and more than 1 million EU citizens spoke in support of the EU Nature Restoration Law. We call on Ukrainian government to keep pace with European integration and start thinking today about implementation of this law ideas in Ukraine!
