On April 29 at 7:00 PM (Kyiv time), the Ukrainian Nature Conservation Group (UNCG) will host an online roundtable discussion via Zoom focused on “iNaturalist in Education: Experiences from Czechia and Ukraine.”
In many countries, citizen science tools are being integrated into education. Young people gain knowledge and develop crucial pro-environmental skills, while educators find new opportunities for conducting fieldwork and evaluating the work of students and schoolchildren. Using citizen science tools in education allows a large number of users to be involved in collecting biodiversity data, but it also has its own specific features.
The roundtable will discuss the following key points:
- iNaturalist in the learning process: Using the app as a pocket field guide, field diary, attendance register, and research tool for students.
- Managing “educational projects” on iNaturalist: Understanding the “rules of the game” and the scope of responsibility for the educator.
- iNaturalist as an element of fieldwork practice.
- The role of iNaturalist curators in training beginners.
- The benefits of engaging youth in working with iNaturalist.
- Specifics of using iNaturalist in the educational process in the Czech Republic and Ukraine.
- iNaturalist and other platforms for biodiversity monitoring in Czech schools.
- Organizing large-scale biodiversity monitoring events, such as the City Nature Challenge, and the role of the National Museum of the Czech Republic in this process.
We invite you to connect to the Zoom conference and join the discussion!
The event continues the cycle of webinars being held as preparation for the First All-Ukrainian Bioblitz. This initiative is part of the project “Saving Natural Heritage for LIFE in Ukraine” (LIFE23-PRE-CZ-ConNaturLIFE Ukraine), which is co-financed by the European Union and the Ministry of the Environment of the Czech Republic.
