Not only biologists need information about the distribution of biological species. This knowledge is necessary for the establishment of protected areas, planning of forestry activities, preparation of EIA reports, and urban planning documentation. However, it is not easy to find such data in the public domain. Their largest hub is the global biodiversity database GBIF, which is a complicated tool for non-professional biologists.
Thanks to our Dutch partners, The Habitat Foundation, and the support of NLBIF, we have developed a special web browser “Biodiversity Viewer”. It allows everybody to get available GBIF data on rare species for any territory of Ukraine in a matter of minutes. Today, the application was presented at the Ministry of Environment.
Biodiversity Viewer provides information about protected species and can also assess any area for the presence of such species. Therefore, the application will facilitate the work of participants in the process of EIA and SEA preparation. Nowadays, the system already contains about 2.5 million data.
The application is available at the link: https://uncg.org.ua/biodiversity-viewer/
“Biodiversity Viewer” is an open software. We developed it together with The Habitat Foundation within the project “GBIF Viewer – an open web-based biodiversity conservation decision-making tool for policy and governance”.
